Résumé : There is a lot of interest in the self-assembly of small molecules to generate 1D nanostructures such as tapes, rods or tubes. Formation of such superstructures in solutions is usually accompanied by an enormous increase in their viscosity, and an eventual formation of gels. This is a consequence of the entanglement of the 1D objects present resulting in a 3D network in which the solvent gets trapped due to surface tension. Such gels are thermoreversible and are referred to as supramolecular gels. Therefore, formation of gels can generally be taken as an indication of formation of 1D objects. The structure of the self-assembling molecules may be varied to impart a variety of functions and properties to the gels and also to vary the morphology of the superstructures. In this talk, some aspects of the self-assembly of small molecules and the use of their superstructures as templates to organize nanoparticles into 2D or 3D networks will be presented.
