Universal characterization of photovoltaic materials by luminescence signals analysis

Abstract : We present the use of luminescence imaging systems on various types of materials representative of the diversity of PV generators. The developed methods allow recording spectrally and time resolved images of absolute luminescence flux. Therefore, it is possible to map several absolute properties of any investigated PV absorbers with a spatial resolution down to few microns. For instance, optical voltage measurement using photoluminescence experiment is possible. Comparison with conventional voltage measurement will be discussed. Moreover, optical measurements of carrier transport properties will be shown. Regarding future solar cell generations, the experimental procedures are applied to validate advanced such as the Hot Carrier Solar Cells. The latter concept is particularly interesting as we experimentally evidenced a hot carriers solar cell operation beyond the limits of classical PV device. A parallel with thermoelectric devices will be explained. Finally, perspectives based on the use of 2D-materials in PV will be shortly presented.
